I hope that regular readers of my articles have learnt that the key to good health is balance leading to energy, vitality, mental clarity, clear bright eyes, smooth skin and a healthy lean body. Modern lifestyle creates imbalance, obesity, premature ageing, tiredness and ultimately disease. We know that the top three killers – cancer, heart disease and diabetes, are all directly linked to diet. We also know that we are capable of living healthily, past one hundred years right up until the day we die. So where do we start?
Well personal experience led to me learning about the importance of PH Balance. As a nutritionist and someone who practices what they preach, I could not understand why, I still had a digestive complaint even though I was eating what I considered very healthily. As I investigated further, I discovered many of the “good” foods I was eating were in fact acid forming in the body.
Different areas of the body have different ideal PH levels, but the most telling is blood, which needs to be kept in a very narrow range – mildly basic or alkaline. The relationship between acid and base (alkaline) is scientifically measured on a scale of 1 – 14 known as PH. 7 is neutral, below is acidic and above is basic or alkaline. The body will go to great lengths to stay clear of over acidity, because it underlies all disease.
The body is vulnerable to germs only when it is acidic. We cannot tolerate extended acidity and our body will warn us early with headaches,
allergies, sinus and skin problems, we often ignore these signs and take a “pill” to alleviate symptoms. As you continue out of balance oxygen levels decrease, your body tries to redress the balance taking important minerals, including calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium from tissues. Deficiency develops creating other health issues and as toxicity builds up in the body serious disease sets in. Ironic really, all these women eating dairy for calcium to prevent osteoporosis, dairy is highly acidic and as the body tries to rebalance, robbing tissue and then bone for calcium, the condition worsens.
Candida is a yeast type of fungus in the body which we cannot live without, however as with most things balance is critical. Excess acid causes out of control growth, resulting at best in “yeast infections or thrush”, creating poisonous toxins in our body. I was truly amazed when I found the symptons of Candida overgrowth to be anything from indigestion or IBS through to obesity, chronic fatigue, insomnia and suicidal tendencies. The good news from all of this is that once your body returns to a healthy base PH, yeast fungus and mould will stop growing and toxins are eliminated.
Below are some simple tips to get you started on the road to a healthy acid/alkaline balance.
- Eat less meat and dairy
- Eat more vegetables especially green leafy veg
- Reduce or eliminate alcohol, coffee and completely eliminate soft drinks.
- Try going gluten free
- Drink plenty of filtered or bottle water daily (at least 8 – 10 glasses).
- Add a teaspoon of wheat or barley grass to each litre of water you drink.
- As always avoid processed foods.
